Avid Oregon history reader and longtime OHS Museum Store bookshelf curator Andrew VanDerZanden shares some of his favorite books of Oregon history, answers your questions about what to read for the knowledge you seek, and invites you to suggest your most valued publications. Inspired by our new exhibit —We are the Rose City! A History of Soccer in Portland —the presentation will focus on works of sports history. Through a wide-ranging discussion of classics to new releases, conversation with the audience will be sure to cover everything from beloved works to new-to-you authors.

Andrew is the Manager of Merchandise Operations at the Oregon Historical Society and loves to field questions from all comers. He has been an enthusiastic purveyor of history since he learned that not only did people live in the Americas before Christopher Columbus “discovered” it but he was not even the first European to sail across the Atlantic. Heeding his mother’s advice, he did not declare his intent to major in history during his first semester at Beloit College and instead waited until his second.
