Supporting young children’s investigations and expressions: A collaboration between Portland State University: Helen Gordon Child Development Center and The Oregon Historical Society
The 2008-09 school year began with the formation of a new collaboration in the community with the Helen Gordon Child Development Center of Portland State University. What began as simply a means to expose the children to the museum’s exhibits has now become a full-fledged mini-exhibit now open at OHS.
During the run of our featured Will Vinton exhibit “The Amazing World of Claymation,” the studio teachers in the preschool classroom decided to forge a link between the exhibit and a classroom activity. Students used claymation as a basis to study the feelings of sadness, and then created a series of story-line characters as a result of their lesson. Now, these pieces made by the children are currently being featured on the first floor of the museum, also giving the students a chance to see their work presented in a public showcase. We invite our members and the community to delve into the psyche of a child and enjoy this collaborative piece open for the next few weeks. |
